D.E.L.S. Ivory, Mfg. was founded in 1968 by Louis E. Brown. D.E.L.S. is an acronym for David, Eric, Linda, and Steve, Louis' four children. The company began as a simple business operating from Louis' home in Massachusetts. Ivory and scrimshaw were the primary items made and sold at D.E.L.S., however, due to the success of this small company it later expanded to include jewelry and nautical items. David, the eldest child, began working for his dad at the age of 11, and quickly learned the tools of the trade and the concept of owning a family business. At the age of 19 David lost his dad in a tragic automobile accident, and decided to continue his dad's business with the help of his brothers and sister. Over the years ivory and scrimshaw, in it's traditional nautical and jewelry use, began to phase out. David therefore sought alternative uses for his product, and in the early 1980's D.E.L.S. began to make pegs, knobs, and scrimed ovals for the famous Nantucket Basket Purses, which also led to the making of Nantucket Basket molds. D.E.L.S. has its own wood shop where all the molds, handles, rims, and bases are made, as well as an ivory shop where ivory and bone pieces are cut and shaped. Their expanded product line of Nantucket Basket jewelry, ceramic candle holders and scrimshawed wine stoppers complements their primary line of supplies for basketweavers of the original Nantucket Baskets. D.E.L.S., Mfg. remains a family business where pride is taken in all of the products, whether it is a piece of custom scrimed ivory by their in-store scrimshander, or a simple Nantucket Basket handle make in their wood shop, You can rest assured that any product you purchase from D.E.L.S. has been carefully crafted to ensure that it is made of only the highest quality materials and workmanship. |
